Dr. Appavu will closely work with students to determine a topic that students want to work on.

SESSION 2: Methods to conduct preliminary research

Introduction to various journals that Dr. Appavu. He will provide an introduction to the format and other requirements of the research paper.

SESSION 3: How to Research?

Intense deep dive into articles, students will learn how to conduct preliminary research. In this stage, students will learn to formulate some research questions. To write research questions, they will try to finish the following sentence: “I want to know how/what/why…”

SESSION 4: Create a research paper outline and the first draft

Expressing your ideas as clearly as possible, so you know what you were trying to say when you come back to the text.

  1. What? Be specific about the topic of the paper, introduce the background, and define key terms or concepts.
  2. Why? This is the most important but also the most difficult, part of the introduction.
  3. How? To let the reader know what to expect from the rest of the paper, the introduction should include a “map” of what will be discussed, briefly presenting the key elements of the paper in chronological order.

SESSION 5: Write the Introduction, compelling body of text, and conclusion

The research paper introduction should address three questions: What, why, and how? After finishing the introduction, the reader should know what the paper is about, why it is worth reading, and how you’ll build your arguments.

SESSION 6: Review and Second draft

Check how the student's vision of the paper aligns with the first draft and, more importantly, that paper still answers the assignment.

SESSION 7: Draft review by Dr. Rajagopal Appavu

Final peer-review by Dr. Rajagopal Appavu for journal publication.

SESSION 8: Thesis Defense and Oral Presentation by Students (will be a final ceremony!)

The last hurdle in the process will be an oral examination. Most students find it rewarding and intellectually exciting to present their work or research to an audience. Students will be required to prepare a 5-minute presentation and field questions. Parents and siblings are encouraged to participate in this session. (Date will be decided at a later time!)

Coach JO will review how to submit research papers to various publications that accept high school student research journals, and Gifted Gabber website.

Benefits of Research Program

Research can be included in the extracurricular activity list, resume, and any awards received as a result of Research. Scientific Journal publishing is one of the key ingredients when it comes to applying for Pre-med colleges.

College admissions officers recognize the value of high school research projects and feel that the very act of completing such extensive projects speaks to a student’s passion, perseverance, intellectual capacities, and ability to handle challenges.

By engaging in performing research, high school students develop critical thinking, logical reasoning, problem-solving, deep learning, and analytical skills. Variety of supplemental essays would allow you to discuss your research or why a particular college is a good fit for you.

My biggest win since writing this research topic will be finally submitting this paper, and it is published. Dr.Raj mentored and taught me new concepts, whileCoach Jo helped me a lot because she gave positive and blunt input that helped me further the horizons of my paper.

Dr. Raj was very knowledgeable and helpful throughout the entire process. His expertise ensured that my paper included an abundance of information.

Dr.Raj provided me with a good idea of what I should look into and how the way I present my research will be perceived by others.

My best win was successfully completing my paper. Coach Jo helped by being very encouraging and making sure I did more and more work each week instead f just waiting for the last week.

Working with Dr.Raj helped me write my research paper because he gave a lot of constructive criticism and helped me learn about my topic.

I feel like going through the whole writing process and the Thursday classes hosted by Coach Jo definitely helped me improve as a writer.
