This is a 9-week program where the student will conduct research and write a scientific journal guided by Dr. Rajagopal Appavu; imminent researcher, Assistant Professor, Vaccine Developer, Senior Data Scientist/Analyst, Toxicologist, and Chemist. 

Students will be guided in writing a 4000+ word research paper and submitting them to journals.

2023 Summer Research Program

Session Details

SESSION 1: Choose a research paper topic

Dr. Appavu will closely work with students to determine a topic that students want to work on. 


SESSION 2: Methods to conduct preliminary research

Introduction to various journals that Dr. Appavu. He will provide an introduction to the format and other requirements of the research paper.


SESSION 3: How to Research?

Intense deep dive into articles, students will learn how to conduct preliminary research. In this stage, students will learn to formulate some research questions. To write research questions, they will try to finish the following sentence: “I want to know how/what/why…”


SESSION 4: Create a research paper outline and the first draft

Expressing your ideas as clearly as possible, so you know what you were trying to say when you come back to the text.

  1. What? Be specific about the topic of the paper, introduce the background, and define key terms or concepts.
  2. Why? This is the most important but also the most difficult, part of the introduction. 
  3. How? To let the reader know what to expect from the rest of the paper, the introduction should include a “map” of what will be discussed, briefly presenting the key elements of the paper in chronological order.

SESSION 5: Write the Introduction, compelling body of text, and conclusion

The research paper introduction should address three questions: What, why, and how? After finishing the introduction, the reader should know what the paper is about, why it is worth reading, and how you’ll build your arguments.


SESSION 6: Review and Second draft

Check how the student's vision of the paper aligns with the first draft and, more importantly, that paper still answers the assignment.


SESSION 7: Peer-review by Dr. Rajagopal Appavu

Final peer-review by Dr. Rajagopal Appavu for journal publication.


SESSION 8: Thesis Defense and Oral Presentation by Students (will be a final ceremony!)

The last hurdle in the process has been an oral examination. Most students find it rewarding and intellectually exciting to present their work or research to an audience. Students will be required to prepare a 5-minute presentation and field questions. Parents and siblings are encouraged to participate in this session. (Date will be decided at a later time!)

Research Publishing

Final approved drafts will be published in JASS@STEM (Journal of American Scientific Society@STEM)Journal of Student Research (JSR), which is a Multidisciplinary and Faculty-reviewed journal, and other publications that accept high school research papers.

About Lead Researcher

Dr. Rajagopal Appavu, Research Expert

Dr. Rajagopal Appavu is currently a Professor in the Health Care Studies department at the University of South Florida and was previously a Professor of pharmacology and Toxicology at the Sealy Center for Vaccine Development University of Texas Medical Branch-Galveston, Texas. He received his Ph.D. in Molecular Biophysics (Biochemistry) from Indian Institute of Science-Bangalore, India. He received his M.Sc. in Chemical Sciences from Pondicherry University, Puducherry and his B.Sc. in Chemistry from Govt. Arts College, Salem, Tamil Nadu.

Expertise: Vaccine & Drug Development, Medical Device Technology, Data Science, Pharmaceutical DNA/RNA Biology, Chemical Biology

Skills: Innate Immunity, Immunology of Infectious Diseases, Mass Spectrometry, Chromatography, Organic Synthesis, Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Immunity, Flow Cytometry, Cellular Immunology, Infection.

About Your Instructor

Jothsna Kethar, Mentor and Coach

Coach Jo, as her students call her, is an Independent Educational Consultant and College Counselor. She is a certified Tony Robbins Life Coach. She trained to identify children's goals, and be their supportive friend and trusted adviser. She has also Trained under Peg Dawson, EdD., a renowned psychologist. She uses this understanding to coach children to discover their strengths to overcome their hurdles and roadblocks on their path to success. She is a certified Meditation Instructor as well and strives to empower parents in their child’s educational journey.

Jo also runs a nonprofit named InspireYouth, a nonprofit 501©3 organization that aims at empowering youth and fostering leadership. InspireYouth aspires to create lifetime humanitarians out of teens by providing various volunteering opportunities to contribute, learn and grow! 

She completed her College Counseling course at UC Berkeley. Building a customized college list is her specialty. Her students have landed in Ivy league colleges such as Cornell, also landing in affordable colleges, winning merit aid/scholarships to the tune of over 2 million dollars in total.

About Program Coordinator

Smrutha Vikram, Program Coordinator and Lead 

Teaching is Smrutha's passion, and she has been instructing students of all ages for the past 10 years. She strives to create a space for students to explore their hidden talents while helping them further their interests and passion. Smrutha is an integral part of Gifted Gabber and creates and runs various programs. She is the main point of contact for the Fall 2022 Research Program.

Smrutha has been instrumental in successfully getting 2022 Summer Research students to complete their research papers and publish them.
