Methodology #1

This introductory course in research methodology will help students write a research paper on a topic they care about. Students will bring their own interests and values, and we will help them identify topics and research questions to engage their interests.

Methodology #2

We will teach them the basics of research methodology and academic writing. They will research their questions and write a research paper. The process is the same whether you are an 8th grader or a tenured professor, but this particular course is for 8th to 10th graders.

Methodology #3

In addition to coming to class, students must set aside several hours to work on their research independently. They will have a substantial research assignment to complete each week for 10 weeks.

About Your Presenter

Mariana Horta

Mariana Horta loves to help students find and pursue their interests. She believes in the transformative power of education beyond the economic advantages it confers. Education can make us better citizens, partners, and parents. More immediately, she wants her students to experience the joys of solving challenging problems and seeking new knowledge.

She helps young people pursue individual projects as independent researchers, as creative makers, and as volunteers to causes, they care deeply about. She does this because meaningful work prepares students for college and beyond.

Mariana graduated from the University of California Berkeley and Princeton University, studying Sociology, Demography, and Public Policy. Before founding Apply Well, she worked as a researcher, a university teaching assistant, a writing center tutor, and a web content creator.  Originally from Brazil, she now lives in Montclair, NJ, where she gardens with her husband and daughter. When she is not working or spending time with her family, Mariana volunteers for several education-related initiatives.
